Go to Costco and buy the 22" Costco brand carry on bag. Mine has held up for 3 years used for both carry on and for check baggage. They are made very heavy duty and are very much non-descript. Put some sort of colored tag on the bag to help you distinguish it from the others.
I just purchased the 26" large bag as well.
Last year, to "upgrade" I bought some of the lower end Samsonite, and it has already fallen apart. Forget it. Buy the Costco stuff.
