This is not good news for Audi.

When Sports Car International drove the prototype R8 V12 tdi, they remarked how quiet the car was and questioned whether buyers might want more aural stimulation. Audi people said it could be done.

The initial offering of R8 tdi will be with Audi's V8.

It raises an interesting question. Do people really buy these cars for the performance or for other reasons? From time to time, the sound track would be great (I admit to driving through a certain steel tunnel when I'm enjoying the old E) but do you want to listen to it all the time? Wouldn't you prefer to have a touque curve that felt like the hand of God throwing the car toward the next corner?

The R8 already seems to have gained some recognition an a 'practical supercar'. Will the tdi engines enhance that or prove to be the answer to a question most buyers aren't asking?
