I agree that the name of the game is wrong.
It should be called 'superball' and it is the best viewing sport out there. The players are the best all-around athletes in the world. There are the ~6'-10", ~350 lbs (208 cm, 160 kgs) linemen who are unbelievably quick and vicious and hit each other with brutal violence. Then there are the skill players-- tall, agile quarterbacks throwing rocketing passes to graceful, tall, lightening quick receivers while guarded by equally menacing defensive counterparts and running backs making deft zigzag cuts to avoid decapitating hits. The strategy behind the game and choreography of the moving chess pieces is unmatched in any other sport. Just watch NFL highlights in 3/4 speed. I can't think of any sport that films as well.
That said, I prefer basketball, as I play the game weekly and appreciate the athleticism. Soccer is athletic and fun to play but is boring to watch. Rugby appears to be a mad scramble and I don't question their toughness but they don't have to be the same size or have the same agility as professional NFL superball players. Ray Lewis is the meanest man alive though....
