You're correct. They could still do some good timely stuff. And some of the best minds in animation have been working on pitching new shows with older characters, including the Looney Tunes. Where the snag is the studio execs, the lawyers, the various interest groups, etc. Everyone with an old property is, if not overly careful, horribly afraid of offending someone with the classic behavior of classic animated characters. So, in the case of Warner Bros, they'll just let the Looney Tunes fade away. Or, blasphemy them with something like this:
