He blew the whistle, the play was dead at that point. Yes, he blew the call on the Cutler fumble but once the whistle blows the play is over. That's football for you.

Yeah, the whistle blew, but SD would have recovered the ball, whistle or not. Cutler lost it, and it bounced right into the linebackers hands, game over. The whistle had no affect. A rule change is needed to allow the recovering team to gain possession in this type of situation, just don't let them advance the ball.
I'm no Charger fan, but it just sucks when the outcome is altered by a referee's f/u. Now if the ball bounced around for awhile, and some players didn't pursue it because of the whistle, that's another story. But in this case...it just sucks.
