If you use a standard live trap it won't be a problem for pets. Bait it with apple, peanut butter, cabbage, broccoli, and you'll catch a varmint or a really dumb cat.

Use the poisons IN the rodent holes and you shouldn't have a problem with pets eating it. The stuff I would use is cracked corn covered in poison, labeled as mole /woodchuck poison.
