If you trust your mechanic, and he/she says to replace the cat: do it.
My experience is the cat breaks up over time, and very well could be plugging the exhaust.
Orange is a great color for a car, but VERY bad for a car's exhaust. That's about 1500-1600F. Don't run the car until you fix it. Obviously something is very wrong.
