"Stopping power"....hmm. Work on your shot placement and you won't have to worry about it.
Get a 5-shot .357m. You'll be able to run .38sp in it until you can handle the .357 (with some practice you'll do fine).
From everything I've read, Charter guns are pretty rough around the edges and there's a reasonably high rate of problems with them. "Made in the USA" isn't a guarantee of quality anymore.
