Years ago there was a So. Cal. guy that put a 900 hp Nissan (NPTI) GTP engine in a sand rail. The buggy was called Mega Bucks and the name fit the project.
Now adays you see buggies with budgets well into the 6 figures. Just the Mendiola transmission will set you back $25K+.
