Yes it is. .... an electric switch on the master cylinder. If only maximum pedal pressure closes the switch, you have an issue.

Someone have the odds on both brake light filiments burning out simultaneously? IMHO, it's pretty high.

Read Bill V's post. That's probably the source of the malfunction.
