Put yourself in post-Katrina New Orleans. Would you rather have had guns or not?
I rest my case.
With guns: Can easily protect yourself, your family, your property, your interests. Gives you leverage to trade/barter.
Without guns: You're a target, especially if you have things that people WITH guns might want - property, food, water, clothing, shelter, money, gasoline, etc.
I'm not so naive as to think we can live without them. Throughout history, even the most "civilized" societies are always built on the pillar of good defense and the willingness of people to fight for their way of life and beliefs.
The immediate threat of an Obama presidency is that he'll go on a witch hunt against firearms and they'll be so heavily restricted as to be virtually impossible to obtain or keep. Any government that wants to disarm its citizens is one that we should be very, very concerned about. That's enough reason for me too.
And rest assured, if there ever was a breakdown of law and order in this country or a failure of it, or (more likely) we plunge into another Great Depression with open looting, theft, violence and lawlessness in the streets, I won't hesitate to look out for myself. The ones that will be screwed will be the ones that have drank the Kool-Aid and believe that government, law enforcement and the guys with white hats will always be there to save them.
Bottom line is I hope I never have to use them, but if the situation ever arises where I need to, I'll be glad I'm prepared and won't hesitate. It's an extension of the motto I learned in scouts years ago, "Be Prepared".
