I came at it sorta backwards, PRE-bug, I came upon a steal on a '57 Porsche speedster in '58 with 14k on the clock. At the time there were FOUR Porscheii registered in the entire state. It cost $2,475 and served me 144,000 miles before I traded it (On a 1961 Corvair Monza!) After that I loved a series of bugs, 6 Ghias, fastbacks, squarebacks, dunebuggies, busses, campers, and a mint microbus with all the little portholes.
Carefully placed in the garage I have a go-fast 79 Strosek SC with marvelously tweeked suspension...and a prim '76 912-E that I am growing to love...but the most mileage gets racked up by the mildly hopped '68 (or 69? The first year they dropped the "tube-type" bumpers) Bug. Btw: That trusty beetle cost me $45 more than I was quoted for an oil change and valve adjust on the 11;-(
It is sorta like reading Playboy while your wife cooks dinner. You may be "interested" in all the fancy, high maintenance furbeloes..but you always come home to cheek to cheek with OLD Faithful.
Wasn't it Paul Newman who arrived at the Academy Awards ceremony sandwiched in all the fleet of limos driving a lemon yellow convertible bug? albeit, with a 6-banger stuffed in the back;-)
