S Fuel Pump - Wrong one fitted!

HELP - a bit long - sorry.....

My 2.4S runs okay, but has never run fantastically. I have alway thought the throttle response wasn't lightening like I had been promised, the car was running rich (and would puff out light grey 'fuel' smoke when accelerating through 4000rpm for the first time). Also, although it would start first time, it wouldn't idle, and would usually die with the first touch of the throttle.

I wasn't brave enough to tackle this myself, and took the car to a specialist. They tried to improve the fuelling, but said that problem was with the fuel metering unit (it couldn't be adjusted down low enough), and recommended that the unit be re-built.

I waited a while due to finances, but took the plunge a couple of weeks back to get the fuel unit rebuilt (the car was taken to the same specialist, who subsequently sent the pump away for rebuild).

I got the call back this morning to say that the pump isn't from a 2.4, but actually a 2.2 (I believe it is from an S), and that it has been set up for a 2.7. They say that they will be able to adjust the settings to suit a 2.4.

From the engine numbers, the motor is definately a 2.4S, and there is little to suggest that the rest of it has been played around with (except a large front (behind bumper) mounted oil cooler), but it raises the following questions

1) It is possible (though unlikely) that the engine has been increased to a 2.7 - Would I able to check this without taking the head off?
2) Assuming the motor is a 2.4, do you think that the 2.2 pump will be able to be set to do the job properly?

At the moment, my feeling is that I need a fuel pump, and at least the 2.2 unit will be rebuilt and set to my motor. Unless I act quickly, I guess I am also going to be paying for this work (maybe already too late). Using this pump will improve on the previous performance, and may be preferable to buying a 2nd hand 2.4S unit that may have been played around with, and hence also require rebuilding. What do you think.....
