First, a few questions:
So this is new behavior since you got broadband, right?
Who is your ISP?
What version of IE are you running?
Have the latest updates?
Are you running Vista or XP?
Do you have a wired or wireless router?

As SlowToady suggested, try running IE with no add-ons. Here's how with:
Click Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools, and then click Internet Explorer (No Add-ons).

Does closing a second tab or window still close IE?

It's been about a decade since I changed ISP's, but I'm wondering if you've got a version of IE that was set up to work with a proxy when you got your new service and that's why Firefox won't work.
