I've played small stakes online poker nearly every day for the last couple years. No withdrawals yet if life gets in the way. My wife works split shift til 10pm so it keeps me home, out of trouble, and it's way more fun than solitaire or watching TV. I've played poker off and on for 35 years, usually friendly home games.
Best part is I've never made a deposit to my Poker Stars account. My brother transferred $50 for my 50th b-day to my play money account there. My bankroll is now around $550 down from a high of $675, but I'm not turning pro just yet. My goal is simply to play with profits and never-ever make a deposit. Very doable.
You can invest 10 cents and win $75 if you are the last man standing in a 3500 player tourney. Takes less than 3 hours time. The reward vs risk is appealing and much better odds than a lottery. While luck plays a large part, skill will help a better player win over the lesser skilled players (known as donkeys).
Besides, I read that video games can stave off Alzheimer's. Lots of math in poker and I'm hoping to keep my brain lubed.
