In the process of undergoing these changes, the TV or movie series loses its original appeal. Shows that have "caught the zebra" are typically deemed to have passed their peak. According to the theory, once a show has "Caught the Zebra" fans can designate the point of the show's perceived decline in overall quality with the "Catch the Zebra" moment.

The phrase refers to a scene in a three-part episode of the American TV series, Family Guy, first broadcast on November 20, 2008. In the "Gun Show" episode, Chris Griffin (Seth Green), wearing swim trunks and his trademark blue Tee-Shirt, Catches a stray Zebra while attending a gun show at a local fairgrounds.
