This seems so clearly planned that I don't really feel bad for them...more so the people I work with. They deserved better. I'll apologize a lot today.

Don't beat yourself up... you gave this guy a shot to improve his life situation and he chose to throw it away.
Coworkers should understand... I'm betting they will see you as compassionate and caring, and the user as the bonehead.
If he had been a meth head and had come in and burned the place down so everyone was out of a job, you'd probably encounter some resentment... but as it stands, you shouldn't have any backbiting, IMO.
