You have to do it that way. iirc, there is a limit to the length of a "clip" in iMovie. It also will create a new clip with any start/stop that is detected. Even if you have a continuous shot it will break them up - has to do with the way files are handled and respective sizes I think.

Just suck the footage in and sequence them in order. The downside is that the latest version of iMovie did away with the timeline. I hate it, and no longer use it (for a variety of reasons). Apple screwed the pooch with this last version imho.
