As a life long PC/unix user I'm completely unimpressed with Mac OS. The hardware, in my case a G5 powermac, is beautiful, but the OS is very pedestrian. For years I've been hearing about how Mac "just works" yet when I need something more than viewing a picture I need Adobe or some other 3 party $$ software. Maybe it's my resistance to drink the cool aid (commit to iTunes and iPhoto) rather than use simple directories to organize my stuff, but I'm ready to pull the trigger on a Craigs list ad for the PowerMac and go back to something I can trust.

Have you ever tried searching for free image editing software? I use seashore and it works quite well:
http://seashore.sourceforge.net/
I do recommend using itunes and iphoto though, because they do make a mac "just work".
