Are you sure you hooked it up correctly? When I installed my repaired alt, I connected the wires to the wrong connector post. I drove the car to work the next day. No problem in the morning but didn't have enought juice to get back home. The car conked out at about 8-9 volts; watched the voltmeter go down from 13V or so. Had to wait 2 hours for AAA tow to show up.
I've had the car towed a couple of times over the years; love their expression when I tell them to take it back to my place instead of a shop.
