My 12 y.o. son and I have been wanting to make a Route 66 pilgrimage for some time now.

Business being what it is, I can take time off between Christmas and January 2nd. We would be going from LA as far east as we have time for. Maybe to Chicago, but at the pace I'd like to take, maybe only to Amarillo.

What should I expect for weather? Too cold, or worth it? Is the Grand Canyon worth seeing in the winter?

(BTW - we were first going to take the 911 (and the Targa doesn't leak but...), then thought about towing a little Teardrop, but now I've found a diesel Sprinter for rent on the cheap, so I think we'll be staying in out of the way campgrounds along the route.)

Any advice would be appreciated.
