Sorry, should have mentioned that I have an older (like 20 year old) BMW motorcycle charger that came with my 1988 R100RS with the smaller factory plug.

It WILL NOT charge through the factory socket on the R1100 series unless the ignition is left on, so a pigtail is needed.

Possibly the newer BMW chargers will work but not this one nor any other one that I tried that is not one of the new style BMW chargers.
