Because women in their late thirties/early forties are starting to decline in their
perceived physical beauty and are competing for the attraction of men. They know men by their very nature are attracted to beauty and youth and younger women are attracted to somewhat older men who are confident and have some measure of perceived power. It's human nature. If you are happy with your situation more power to you. The fact that you are posting this tells me that you are not completely comfortable with the relationship though.
