The 911 was supposed to be phased out of production in the mid 80s; to be replaced by the new Porsche 944. Porsche believed (at the time) that the last carnation of the 901 chassis was the 911SC and so it was named the Super Carrera.
Of course the Porsche 944 failed to replace the 911 just as the 928 has failed to replace it in the 70s.
