I forgot all about this thread! I said I'd repost when I'd read it - it only took me a few days to finish it. I absolutely loved this book! Yes, it's a bit overly sentimental. No, the characters aren't particularly deep or engrossing. No, the writing isn't overly stupendous or anything, but it's a story that draws you in and keeps you there. The scene in Italy at the track is just wonderful. So much ***** happens to poor Denis that by the end when things turn around you just feel so good for him.
This book will never go down in the annals of great literature, but it's absolutely most definitely worth the small amount of time it asks from the reader.
