I would recommend Nokian Hakkapelittas.
What could be better than a snow tire from Finland??? Not easy to find, but they're de rigeur for snow rally. Kinda overkill for some cars in this area (I just run all-seasons on my winter car, but then it is an AWD minivan!), but would be great on a '44.
Oh, yeah - IIRC a local 944 guy (in Farmington Hills) gets them on a fairly regular basis for his rallying; if you're having a tough time finding them, look up Scott_at_Team_Harco on rennlist.
