Not quite- the point was all in how the car is used.
Obviously putting around town the Prius would do much better, but on a track the Prius was at 10/10ths, the M3 probably at 3/10ths.
Likewise, if you put a loaded trailer behind a Prius vs. a Tahoe I'll bet the Tahoe gets better MPG.
Not everyone can afford a different car for each need- so they buy one vehicle that can do all of it. Paying a lot for gas is still cheaper than buying another vehicle.
