If going plasma, the Pioneer Kuro is the way to go. Thier Elite models are the best, but don't represent enough of a jump in quality for the price premium IMO (although they do look nice). However, the pro/industrial Panasonics are excellent (much better than their consumer variants), and a close 2nd to the non-Elite Kuro's IMO. The only downside is that they are pure monitors, so no built-in speakers or tuners. But most folks have dish/cable boxes and at least 2-ch home stereo/speakers, so it's usually a non-issue.
So, if staying with the 50" size, these are the two I would consider (which are almost identically priced):
Pioneer
Panasonic
