Thumbs up Clutch Auxiliary Return Spring aka Horseshoe Spring or Omega Spring

First, I would like to thank Wayne for his 101 Book, John Walker's Workshop for mentioning to replace the seals 915-301-139-00 ( only needed 2 ) and others whom have contributed on this subject.

I am contributing my issues and results with Pics, sorry I am more of a Visual Guy.

Note #1:

Purchase the two smaller Circlips holding the Horseshoe Spring (HSS) and just incase the larger Circlip that retains the Clutch Positioning Lever. I broke one of the smaller ones they are brittle due to age or me being retarded for applying too much pressure. I will explain later what I did or better stated what I didn't do.

I also recommend buying the three washers and one seal for the HSS pin. Will explain later.

The Event:

4 nights ago, on my way home, at a stop light after it turned green , I depressed the clutch and went into first then depressed to go into 2nd. then I heard a "PING" like something metal had dropped and fell on the pavement as I drove off.

I was like "WTF"?

As I slowed down to see if my car was going to blow up I depressed the clutch and it felt like it was a 300 pound leg press.

She shifted fine but the clutch was liken to a Corvette/Truck Clutch.

Arrived at home, lifted her up and to my horror it was the Horseshoe Spring (HSS):

I recently had a entire Tranny and Clutch Job but it appears the Wrench forgot to replace the HSS. How could he know it would break but it seems like it would be a natural item to replace. Needless, to say I could not sleep that night until I ordered the HSS and Seals recommendd by Johnny Walker Shop. Pelican Parts, Jason shipped the same day and I got it the next day, that's what I call "SERVICE" BTW, Dealer wanted $124.95 for their HSS, Way to go Wayne you the Man!

Preparation:

Must Haves:
* Waynes Book, of Course
* BFS (Big Fcuking Screwdriver)
* Circlip Tool (Do not use too much pressure, you will break the smaller CirClips)
* Dremel (You were correct Wayne, it was a breeze to remove)
* C-Clamp and 5 - 3/4" washers (To press the HSS on the pin, if you don't have a vise but you still need the washers)
* Jack Stand & Wheel Blocks (You know why)
* Lithium Grease
* Feeler Guage & Vernier Calipers (Read Wayne's Book)
* Helper's Left Foot or trusty Baseball Bat
* Light if Dark, (I was lucky it wasn't raining today)

Procedure:

1. Raised the passanger side as suggested by a Pelican and placed Jack Stand and Wheel Blocks.

2. Placed Cardboard Matt on the ground underneath tranny from the rear of the car.

3. Used OEM standard screw driver from Porshe Tool Bag to remove the clutch positioning lever's Spring.

4. Used the Screw Driver to loosen the lever and it dropped (no need to remove a retainer pin, post 1978 PAG stopped using it per Haynes), along with Clutch Release Lever and the two Seals (Thanks again John Walker's Workshop) they were filthy and full of road grim. I guess in a pinch, they could be cleaned and re-used. Heck $2.50 ($5.00) why bother.

5. Clutch Cable, I only loosened the one towards the front of the car. The cable was moved out of the way. Note: I figured it would be easier to keep the settings if I do not mess with the rear lock nut. Please experts, chime in if I am mistaken.

6. Cleaned all contact points.

continued for pic limit ...
