See, he was right
I've experienced almost every situation and reaction that's described on this thread in my few years of Porsche ownership. When a fellow owner waves out on the road I tend to forget all about the dumb stuff.
After I got my first 911 I told someone who I thought would appreciate it. His response was "oh, a wine-and-cheese car". I replied that he was confusing a Porsche with a Ferrari
