How about we just call the Eagles winners of 3 NFL championships?
I mean seriously, if the NFL changed the name of the Championship game next year from the Super Bowl to the "Corporate Sponsor-bowl", do you think all the Superbowl championships won when it was called the Superbowl suddenly become nothing? Just because they came up with a different name for the game?
Say the NBA next year changes the name of the "NBA finals" to the "Super-Series"? All those titles won by all those great teams suddenly mean nothing? Is Jordan or Wilt or Dr. J or Magic or Birds' or the teams they played for legends reduced?
Of course not, that's silly.
Again: The Eagles are the only team to
ever beat Vince Lombardi and the Green Bay dynasty in the playoffs (1960 championship game, final score 17-13). That's
ever. It is folly to minimize the monumental nature of that feat.
The Eagles' Lombardi trophy
IS Vince Lombardi. They are the only team that can ever make that claim. :-P
And despite the fact that 1969 is also ancient history, the Jets only (SBIII) championship is still a championship, anyway you slice it. What the game is called is irrelevant. I give the Jets full credit for it, and would never besmirch their feat in beating the big-bad Colts.
All told the Eagles have been to 5 championship games, and won 3. The only one that they didn't play extremely well in was SB XV (blown out by the Raiders. Of course no one here cares much about that, as we kicked the snot out of Dallas in the NFC championship game to get there, hehehe).
And none of this changes the fact that
the 08 Dallas Cowboys (the "most talented team in the NFL"- LOLOLOLOL) are a smoking pile of wreckage and ruin.
2 games vs the Eagles- 81 points surrendered, a
40.5ppg avg.
