Have you owned it since it was new? I wonder if it's possible that spring didn't get the full heat/cold tempering treatment at the point of manufacture... I can't think of any other reason it would snap like that.
Find out if there was a recall notice on it.
You could work this to your advantage.
Just cut the one on the other side at the same point and you'd have the nose of the car a bit lower.
