Sometimes "you get what you pay for" also applies to accountants. I've heard a few horror stories. Personally, I wouldn't deal with a CPA that didn't have extensive/practicing tax law experience, especially if your returns are complicated. My CPA has her JD LLM, and I would recommend you look for someone with the same.
