Clear Lake Volcanics of The Geysers geothermal region. This region is underlain by a large felsic pluton (Geysers pluton) at least 20 km long. This young pluton is within only 1 km of the surface beneath The Geysers steam field. The Geysers area is stated to be the largest geothermal power source in the world. From a modest start in the 1920s through large-scale development beginning in the 1960s, The Geysers became the world's largest source of geothermal power, with a capability of nearly 1,100 megawatts (MW) - enough electricity to power 1 million Northern California households of 4 people per household. The current operating capacity is above 850 MW.
