You should put the wheels back on and push the car out to the driveway, apply liberal quantities of simple green, and pressure wash the chassis to see whats under the grime.
928's came with a heavy cosmoline coating on much of the underside including suspension, wheel arches etc.
Underneath that, the actual coatings painted on the frame from new are also pretty tough - mine has a thick rubberised undercoat beneath body paint on the frame, to afford even more protection.
With a good clean, you might find that you don't need much at least on the front end of the unibody. The rear quarters are however often a different story as the steel body panels got scratched or suffered from trapped dirt/moisture.
