I've never had to worry about a place to sleep when travelling. I wandered all over Europe and without fail, I'd meet someone in the pub who had a spare couch. Even slept in a barn once. Met a couple of odd people, but nothing ever dangerous, really.
As for a car, get a Honda CRX or Civic. Drive it til it dies.
