We have a '98 Isuzu Trooper S for baby hauling and the occasional off road trip to a trail head here in Arizona. We like it because it's not trying to be a jacked up luxury car of an SUV. It's very basic and huge inside, but very useful. 225 HP makes it reasonably quick for its size. If only the A/C were better!
For quick around town trips and for my wife to park at the airport, we have a beater '91 Mazda Protege LX. The paint's faded and it's dented and dinged, but with 125 HP, 5spd and the coldest A/C of any car we've ever owned we love it. The previous owner decided he was going to keep it forever and spent $2000 fixing everything... then sold it to us 6 months later. With only 85K miles we'll have it for a long time.
