My daily driver is the bus. If the parking near work wasn't $15/day (plus $3 bridge toll) I'd drive the 944 daily. I've been very unimpressed with the quality of VW's, a BMW is closer to a Porsche, in my opinion. I'd consider a 944 or an older BMW. But if you're like me, you'll always just wish you were driving your "better car," which is why I'll sell my 944 soon. My dad works at a Jeep dealer and says they're good cars, so you might be happy with one of those... if you're actually willing to drive something American...
