there are plenty of mods you can do to an N/A engine - you can get about 230hp out of it - the results may not be worth the extreme expense though, and the street-ability compromise may be beyond what you would want - cost is probably about $15k
a 968 engine would probably be the most cost effective drop in - there are some drive train, suspension and brake mods to do to handle it, but you could get there for a lot less than the above scenario, and have street-able power, and more of it - cost can be as low as about $8k
a V8 is a big deal - a lot of guys cram one in, but the car is usually not at all useable for long - the chassis is way to soft for that much torque, requiring reinforcement - the brakes and suspension are nowhere near capable, and the gearing is all wrong - getting it to fit is easy - getting it to drive well (and get beyond the simple grin from the power) is a whole different story - cost to do it "right" is about $20k
