OK -- maybe it isn't so obvious to the very casual, non-mechanical observer...in short:
As I said before the WHOLE configuration is different. A V-8 CAN fit -- sortof, but special pipes and a host of custom hardware are needed to put the V-8 in. It is tight! The V-8 is actually narrower than the P-car flat six. Notice how wide the 911 series is in the back? OK now move it up to the front of the engine compartment of a 944. See it fits (maybe)! but wait -- that's only if you want to go in a straight line -- you don't have enough room left over to turn the wheels! (wider a-arms and flaired fenders off a 911T?!)
Also, the way the engine is mounted is completely different. The 911's mount from the transaxle but the 944 mounts from the side -- real nightmare there. Then there is the cooling differences. The 911 flow is fully developed (ie. the method is set). You would have to make special scoops (I'm getting the worst visions of scabbed-on crap you could imagine!) to make sure the airflow was complete through the engine and then out the engine compartment etc. (because it is cooled by oil and air only).
The adapter from the flat-6 to the 944 drive shft would be a hum-dinger
As stated earlier, the 911 stuff is so expensive you'd just be pi$$ing in the wind for less HP than you could get out of a 951 motor (the best V-8 conversions already use the 951 tranny etc) for a lot less money and a fraction of the effort (sticking with a stock 951 set-up).
I mean what's the motivation? With a V-8 at least you could say you could get rediculous amounts of HP and lots of Torque, plus parts for a V-8 are relitively cheap (junk yard late model chevy (Camaro, Corvette etc) for $2500) -- there's the motivation!
Hey! just reverse the ring and pinion on a 911 and drive it backward in 5 gears!
There is just no reason short of insanity that anyone could have to do this. Pa-Lease tell me no one is serious about the cause the propane tank is standing by for the flaming!
