A nice side benefit of an 11-87 Remington is that it's gas operated, so it kicks a lot less than a 870. A used 11-87 is probably about the same price as a new 870.
I've owned a Remington 1187 in 12ga for 13 years and have used it for duck/goose/pheasant hunting and skeet/trap and it's a great shotgun. Very easy to shoot, minimal recoil and easy to clean. Very reliable and inexpensive. I bought mine used at the local Gander Mountain for $375, I believe, but that was 13 years ago...
