To prevent rust, you have to limit moisture exposure to bare metal. There really is limited bare metal (steal) on the later cars. Best practice is not to use in the snow and rain. Use care when washing. Remember that air has moisture in it in the form of humidity, so you will really never really be able to eliminate exposure 100%.
