The 'Essential Buyers Guide - Porsche 928' by David Hemmings has a good explanation of the transmission number.
- digit 1 - 1 means 8 cylinder
- digit 2 - 1 means 5 speed manual transmission
- digit 3 - 0 means 1980. 8-1978, 9-1979, A-1981 etc. Letters I/O/Q are not used. S-1995.
- digits 4-7 means unit serial number
