I removed the oil cooler lines completely and put bolts and washers into the holes. The holes in the block up around the oil filter were filled by regular oil-pan drain plugs, if I'm remembering right, purchased for a couple of bucks. Had no effect on cooling, and one less thing to worry around leaking. Might be a cheap fix for you. I think I read somewhere that the oil cooler was installed for very long distance and very high speed driving; no place to do both at the same time where I live.
