whats it take to legally change car model?

i got to thinking about it and was wondering what it would take to legally change a cars model.

for instance i have a 1984 944. if i was to put a 1994 968 engine, would/could i reregister the car as a 968.

what would it take to reclassify the car. if its based upon VIN numbers and the engine is the heart.

what classifies a car as the model car for insurance purposes? i know the VIN does but if you changed a piece of the chasis and the engine wouldnt the car be considered the donor car since a majority of it is from the other car.

or would this large switch up make the car a "modified car" or "kit car"

i was really wondering this for insurance reasons. with a 944 being valued to insurance companies as like 3-4 grand and a 968 being valued much higher, after doing many modifiations to the 944 and making it closer to a 968 than 944 the cost the insurance would cover incase of an accident seems better.
