Carlock is damn good, thanks for introducing him. I also agree with the solo thing, an example is Joey Jordison of Slipknot. Yea he's really fast but can't play a decent solo to save his life. Anything you hear in his solos is usually stuff he plays in the songs.
If I had to pick a soloist that really gives me goose bumps, I'd have to go with Terry Bozzio.
