West side of Maui is very nice, but very commercial. East side of Maui more laid back, but fewer places too stay.
Kuawai is our favorite, very laid back gorgeous little island. It's been a while since I've been, but just a more relaxing place to me. If you go, check out Barking Sands Beach, one of the most awsome beaches in the world, IMHO.
