For starters it might be any bug in the book. Not just the flu (if you are referring to the Influenza virus). As the viral shedding is extremely varying between different bugs, there is no way of telling how long a certain individual is contagious. Generally speaking its possible to shed virus as long as there are any symptoms left, although the highest numbers will occur during the first part of the illness. As a rule of thumb (with adults), if you can avoid coughing in the face of other people and regularly wash your hands, the risk of handing over a complementary bug to your friends is small.
