Sure recoil pads help, but the most important thing I tell anyone that I let shoot one of my 12ga shotguns is to bury the stock into their shoulder like they mean it! If it is not SOLIDLY planted, it will put the hurt to you. My 100 lb teen daughters have both shot my 12 ga without any sort of recoil pad and they both can deal with it so long as they really pull it hard into their shoulder.
