Couldn't disagree more, but to each his own I guess. I will say that Puccini's phrases which nod to the Star Spangled Banner best the original IMHO.
I took a class in college focused on the operas which have sprung from non-operatic material, e.g. Madame Butterfly, Der Rosenkavalier, Lucia di Lammermoor etc. Now I make a point of researching the original material and libretto before seeing an opera.
